A few days back, Microsoft introduced Copilot Pro, a paid upgrade to Copilot featuring extra features. Now, Amazon is gearing up to follow suit with Alexa by soon launching a paid version of the service. However, the company is encountering several challenges on this journey. Here's the complete story.
In a recent report from Business Insider, Amazon is working on an enhanced edition of Alexa, internally referred to as 'Remarkable Alexa.' Currently, the brand names the existing version of the voice assistant as Classic Alexa. Amazon plans to unveil Remarkable Alexa on June 30, 2024, under the name Alexa Plus. As the name implies, Amazon aims to offer Alexa Plus through a paid subscription model. In simpler terms, Alexa Plus will be a paid variant of Alexa.
The paid iteration of Alexa is facing difficulties
Amazon is implementing a new large language model (LLM) for Alexa Plus, codenamed Olympus, featuring a distinct structure from the LLM powering Classic Alexa. Through Olympus, Amazon aims to make Remarkable Alexa more conversational and personalized than Classic Alexa. Unfortunately, during a preview offered to 15,000 users, Amazon discovered that while Alexa Plus exhibited improved conversational and personalized traits, it occasionally provided inaccurate information and deflected answers, leading to dissatisfaction at Amazon.
Amazon is striving to resolve the issue through new technologies
To address the problem, Amazon plans to "completely revamp Alexa's technology stack." Although there is limited information available on this, Business Insider suggests that the company is grappling with challenges in achieving this task. Reportedly, individuals who worked on Classic Alexa are attempting to safeguard their work by insisting that the team working on Remarkable Alexa utilize what they had built for Alexa. This is resulting in a more cumbersome technology stack and internal disputes within the team.
Performance issues may cause a delay in the launch of Alexa Plus
Considering these challenges, Amazon might need to postpone the launch of Alexa Plus. An insider informed Business Insider that if the paid version of Alexa fails to generate revenue, the company's voice assistant business could face trouble. Therefore, to ensure success, Amazon must resolve all issues with Alexa Plus before bringing it to the market. Delaying the product launch is better than releasing an unrefined product with core functionality issues.
