For quite a while, scientists have been thinking that a really big asteroid slammed into Earth about 65 million years ago. This colossal collision is believed to have caused the tragic end of the dinosaurs and also sparked a new era of life on our planet, bringing forth new animals, plants, and other living things from the remnants.

A recent study on genomic diversity, shared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, suggests that the Psilocybe genus came into being approximately 65 million years ago, much earlier than what we used to think. This hints that the appearance of magic mushrooms might have coincided with the dinosaurs biting the dust because of a big space rock hitting the Earth.
Even though these hallucinogenic mushrooms are still against the federal law and are believed to have no medical benefits, researchers from both inside and outside the country have been digging into these fungi as much as possible.
